Aistear
Aistear, the Irish word for journey, is the curriculum framework for children from birth to six years in Ireland. Aistear acknowledges that young children learn best and make sense of the world around them through the medium of play.
Aistear encourages children to engage in enquiry based learning during play. Aistear is used in conjunction with the primary school curriculum, and allows children to expand on knowledge gained in other subject areas in a discovery based method.
We support children’s learning and development by using the four themes outlined in the Aistear framework which are:
- Well being
- Identity and belonging,
- Communicating
- Exploring and thinking.

Alison’s class were really busy in Aistear working on the theme of the dentist. We had lots of fun role playing the dentist, cutting out and thinking about which foods make our teeth happy and sad. We also designed the dentists office with Lego and stuck on marshmallows to show what the dentist can see when he looks into our mouth.
