Physical Education / Sport

Scoil Íosagáin provides a broad physical education, incorporating the six strands as laid out by the Department of Education. The substantial external play area proves a major resource for the school and is complemented by the school hall. We offer a wide range of different activities to allow our pupils to sample different sports. These include:

Gaelic Games: Competitive football for boys and girls is organised in the first term through the Sciath na Scól competitions and in the second term for hurling/Camogie. We are lucky to have amazing trainers from Aghada Gaa club that come in each week to work with the junior side of the school in both hurling and gaelic football. The school has won these competitions a number of times. Philip takes charge of the boys hurling and football and William takes charge of the girls camogie and football.

HOWL: Every Wednesday, the children are encouraged to bring their hurling/camogie gear. At lunch break they will be allowed to use the field for hurling/camogie. This is a great opportunity for them to practice their skills and also play with children from other classes. We have fantastic new goals and nets on our playing field which gives the players a chance to practice free taking, shot taking, side lines etc.

Soccer: The school competes in the FAI 5 a side soccer competition for boys and girls. We enter a number of teams to allow for maximum participation. We have won at county level a number of times and even managed to get to an All Ireland Final. This was an amazing day in the Aviva Stadium. We are so lucky to have an amazing soccer coach in Jerome. He is very passionate about the game and developing soccer skills throughout the school.

Cycling: Cycling lessons are provided to 5th class students where they learn the four core skills of pedalling, balance, braking and cornering. They are also taught about bike and helmet safety checks and road safety. Bicycles and helmets are provided.

Swimming: Lessons are provided in the second term to all classes. As a seaside town, we feel very strongly in developing good water safety with the children.
Gymnastics: Lessons are provided in the second term to all classes.

Orienteering: The Senior classes take part in an orienteering activity each year during the last term.

Thanks to Caitln for her tireless work in running the ceilí Mhór each year. Go-noodle is provided as a warm-up activity in Gymnastics.

Fun Day: A fun day is organised each year by the sixth class where they set up sporting challenges throughout the school. Over the years we have had many exciting challenges such as Rugby toss, sponge throw, crossbar challenge, long puck, penalty kicks, nerf challenge, spin the wheel of fortune,
balance beam, hoop challenge to name but a few. We can’t wait to see what this year’s class come up with….
